History and language will fall under the umbrella of Humanities in Middle School. Students will analyze writings based upon fictional texts, informational texts and argumentative texts. Through Socratic Seminar students will be exposed to historical figures and events. Ancient civilizations, governments, and their economies will be explored. Several major historical events will be identified including: The American Revolution, The Civil War, World War I, and World War II. Students will examine how these events unfold through literary works which allow history to come alive.
Students will explore language in grammar through novels, writing and speech. Novel study will be highly encouraged and allows teens to have the freedom to choose to read. Through writing workshops and reading workshops students will acquire the skills to edit, discuss, and critique literature.
The study of physical science, earth processes, cellular structure, atomic structures, weather, genetics, and energy will open up new possibilities for students. Through readings, labs, and hands-on projects students will be encouraged to discover the world of science. Who needs a science fair, when our entire classroom can explore these topics every day? Students can probe into the rock cycle and discover radioactive dating. They will be encouraged to explore the concepts of cellular structure and how cancer is related to cell division? What is chemotherapy? By creating their own atom models, students will gain an understanding beyond what any book can show them. Science has so much to offer our adolescents during these years of valorization, and our classroom will tap into their creativity and explore the importance of questioning everything.
Students will be assessed for their mathematical understanding the first two weeks of class. The Directress will also visit the Elementary classroom to ensure that proper placement for math is made in Middle School. One of the key concepts in Montessori is that repetition shows mastery. Rest assured students will progress once they begin to master a skill. Our base program in the Middle School program is Pre-Algebra and Algebra, but readiness is essential to this program.
