7th – 8th Grade

The Middle School serves as a bridge to the conventional high schools that most of our graduates attend and although it shares many features with younger classes, it is also a distinctive environment.

The academic program at the Middle School level is rigorous: a thorough grounding in algebra; scientific studies in physics, chemistry, and biology. We include language work in a variety of written forms, with frequent oral presentations; and a comprehensive humanities curriculum focused on novel study with a wide-ranging survey of history, Western culture, and social studies.

Multi-level age groups continue in the Middle School program. Middle School level classrooms are grouped with students twelve to fourteen years of age. The curriculum provides a vision of the universe and everyone’s place in it through the interdisciplinary studies of science, humanities, mathematics, creative writing, geometry, agriculture, art and drama. Montessori encourages independence but stresses the importance of interdependence at the middle school level in an environment specifically prepared and with teachers especially prepared for this purpose.

Work is done in an uninterrupted work cycle, where adolescents have the freedom to engross themselves in work, thereby building valuable concentration skills. Adolescents will utilize concrete materials along with abstract thinking as they demonstrate that they are ready through group lessons and one-on-one lessons with the Directress.

Throughout the school year, parents have many opportunities to become informed about the Montessori approach to learning their child is experiencing. Through Parent Information Nights, Parent/Child Mornings, Parent/Directress Conferences and classroom observations, parents are informed and kept well abreast of the happenings in their child’s education at CMS.

Our new Middle School program encourages valorization of the adolescent. This transitional stage is one in which the adolescent strives to find their place as an adult in this world. Ample opportunities will be provided to each adolescent through hands-on approach teaching, group lessons, and pedagogy of place. While the Middle School classroom will show a more rigid approach to learning, it is only to prepare the students for what is to come in high school. Therefore, allowing each of the students to understand that learning is a process that should be engaging, enriching and exciting.
