Flu Season Info

CMS Health Policy (Parent Handbook, pg. 12):

Parents/guardians are encouraged to inform the Administrator if their child has an infectious disease. Community Montessori School shall comply with federal, state and local laws and regulations regarding reportable communicable diseases and confidentiality of student helath information.

In regards to the H1N1 Flu Virus:

  • Community Montessori School will announce to the parent population when a student or staff member within the CMS population has been diagnosed with a confirmed case of the H1N1 flu virus. To ensure the confidentiality of the health information of the individual, the specific classroom will not be cited.
  • The current CDC recommendation dictates that students/staff are to stay home for 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medicines. Research has shown that the typical time for a person with the H1N1 virus to run a fever has been 3-5 days. Therefore, the person would need to stay home an additional 24 hours after the fever is done. A fever is defined in the Parent Handbook of 100 degrees or higher. This policy is in place for any tpye of fever, flu related or not.
  • To help CMS monitor its illness rate, we ask parents to phone the school to report when their child is sick.
  • As announced at both the elementary and primary Back-to-School nights, parents should be prepared with alternate childcare arrangements in case of school closure mandated by the government or if staff should be debilitated by the virus beyond the use of substitute teachers.
  • CMS will continue its diligence of frequent and thorough handwashing by students and staff as well as covering the nose and mouth when coughing(perferable with the arm). We would ask that each family encourage the same at home. CMS staff is diligently cleaning all surfaces daily, as well as materials.
